Cloudscapes A Selection from the Permanent Collection

Cloudscapes A Selection from the Permanent Collection

As summer approaches, these diverse works of art will encourage you to lift your head to the sky and marvel at what lies overhead. Whatever your pleasure — cumulonimbus, cirrus, stratus — you’ll see nature’s poetry reflected in paintings, photography and prints from UMMA’s extensive collection. Depictions of the puffy formations include a weighty, gusty sky in Sam Cady’s oil painting Snow Squall over Outer Islands, wispy skies in the pastel The Desert Moonlight: Mt. Desert by Frederick Childe Hassam and a looming, driving rain in Siri Beckman’s wood engraving Approaching Storm. The exhibition also features works by Neil Welliver, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Josef Arentz and Jonathan Bailey.
